I am honoured and privileged to be elected as President for 2008, not only for myself, but for my home club, Bingley St. Ives.
I am delighted to take office at a time when the Union is undergoing a period of development both on and off the course. For the past two years we have seen spectacular success achieved by our Scratch Team, matched by success with our Junior Development Programme, which is generously sponsored by the Sunwin Group. It is most encouraging to note that as the age profile of golf club membership seems to be rising, the age profile of our Scratch Team is getting lower, proof, if ever it was needed, of the talent and dedication of our next generation of golfers. I extend my congratulatioons and thanks to the team members and to all involved in the organisation of the team and the development programme.
It is most encouraging to see the increasing interest which commercial organisations are taking in golf. Sponsorship of the Union's many and varied activities is becoming increasingly in demand, and the money received gives us the opportunity to extend our development activities, to the benefit not only of golf within the Union, but to the sport as a whole. On behalf of our member Clubs, I express our thanks and appreciation to each and every sponsor.
The Union is every member Club. All Clubs rely to a great extent upon the efforts and goodwill of those members who undertake roles as Captain, President, Secretary, Treasurer, Committee member, and many others. Without such members we would not keep our sport alive in its traditional form, and competitive amateur golf would wither. I thank you all for your continued efforts and support of the Union, and all Clubs a successful 2008.
